The Sultan of Slam
April 21, 2014

Ten years ago, a Hawaiian-born man left his tropical home for the blustery climes of the East Coast. There, he earned a degree from M.I.T. in nuclear engineering, followed by a research position at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He shed his lab coat and slapped on a suit and tie as a business consultant in San Francisco, until a night out at a poetry slam changed the course of his life forever. He goes by one name — Kealoha — and he is Hawaii's state Poet Laureate, as appointed by the governor in 2012.

March 22, 2014

Honolulu ranks among the urban climes across the nation that boasts a thriving "pop-up" dining scene. Youthful culinary leaders are reshaping the way diners experience local flavors here, often in temporary or "borrowed" space from other, established eateries after they've closed or on dark nights.

Swimming With Sharks
March 21, 2014

Sitting in the small cockpit of a "research vessel," three miles off Oahu's North Shore, a voice shouts "shark in the water!" Our host, Ocean Ramsey, calmly exclaims – "Perfect" – as naturally as, say, brushing her long blonde hair. I can't say I feel the same; but that will change in the next 20 minutes.

Stranger Than Fiction
March 13, 2014

When best selling romance novelist Jane Porter finds herself up against a book deadline — she cranks out at least four novels a year — she packs up a small suitcase, grabs her laptop, and escapes. No children (she has three), no TV, no distractions from life. However, "life" is exactly what sidetracked her in 2004 when she took a 180-degree turn, and the idea for a new novel led her down a path to Hollywood stardom.

Having grown up along New Jersey's beach corridor in Tom's River, Ed Fernandez was no stranger to the surf life. After attending college in a landlocked region of his home state, fleeing to Hawaii was a natural progression. Fernandez settled into Hawaii (Big) Island and set up shop as a freelance food safety regulator, until a family vacation redirected his focus — and launched a clothing line that has earned a cult-like following with locals.
