Modern Music

It’s immediately clear that THE MODERN HONOLULU visually redefines the Waikiki resort.

What might surprise you is how we fine-tune the audio.

    • Daily, we host original, local musicians.

At THE MODERN HONOLULU we host original, local musicians.

Most often, you’ll hear them in the oasis of THE MODERN HONOLULU’s Sunrise Pool or inside The Study, our seductive lobby bar.

That’s not to say you won’t hear a cover from time to time – the musicians we invite to play at THE MODERN HONOLULU are versatile. But they are also authentically Hawaiian – like Christian Yrizarry and Jared Keo, who add a layer of kanikapila to the sensory experience that is our Sunrise Pool. Kanikapila is the Hawaiian take on the acoustic jam – the ideal soundtrack for unwinding poolside amid tropical blooms, or steps away from the pool at the Sunrise Pool bar.

Regularly in The Study, Tahiti Rey sings soulfully to Jason Alan’s free-flowing guitar. Tahiti, a Hawaiian-born singer/songwriter, won a Hawaii Music Award for her debut album, Acoustic Beauty. Rey’s voice set to Alan’s guitar blends smoothly into The Study’s subtle sexiness. Request a signature cocktail and drink it all in.

The Study sounds different during Ice Cream Sundays (10 p.m. to 2 a.m. every Sunday night), when Honolulu DJs Anit and Compose will spin you into a trance. (Frozen indulgences sweeten the scene.) Return to The Study any night between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. for Reverse Happy Hour with specials on featured beer, wine and bottles.

Naturally, Thursdays through Saturdays at ADDICTION pulse to exclusive beats. Thursday Girls’ Nights might feature a Waikiki DJ; Friday and Saturday nights are full of surprises – with frequent appearances by high-profile DJs from the mainland and celeb soirees.

How would you describe your group and your music?

I would describe myself as a singer/songwriter...and I would best describe my music as acoustic soul..a mix of folk, pop and soul.

How is your music influenced by Hawaii?

My music has so many influences, both in Hawaii and out of Hawaii. But in terms of how Hawaii influences my music, I would say that the laidback feel to my music is what I draw most from the Islands.

What is unique about performing at THE MODERN HONOLULU and why do you enjoy it?

THE MODERN HONOLULU is unlike any [place] that I've ever played at/seen before. It's the vibe that makes it unique. It's classy, contemporary...and sophisticated. And the mix of people who come through are always looking for good music.

How is your music influenced by Hawaii?

Hawaii is a melting pot and so is our music. We only sing songs WE LOVE, and that covers a wide range of genres and [spans] the decades. We are inspired by all the visitors to Hawaii [who] love to see that there is not just Hawaiian music at live music venues. They love to hear familiar songs done with our emotionally-driven, soulful delivery.

We perform almost every day somewhere, and THE MODERN HONOLULU is by far our favorite venue. The atmosphere created by the hotel is unmatched by any other venue in Waikiki. It has amazing sunsets, chic decor, wonderful staff, great food and great cocktails.
