Modern Music

It’s immediately clear that THE MODERN HONOLULU visually redefines the Waikiki resort.

What might surprise you is how we fine-tune the audio.

  • Daily, we host original, local musicians.

At THE MODERN HONOLULU we host original, local musicians.

Most often, you’ll hear them in the oasis of THE MODERN HONOLULU’s Sunrise Pool or inside The Study, our seductive lobby bar.

That’s not to say you won’t hear a cover from time to time – the musicians we invite to play at THE MODERN HONOLULU are versatile. But they are also authentically Hawaiian – like Christian Yrizarry and Jared Keo, who add a layer of kanikapila to the sensory experience that is our Sunrise Pool. Kanikapila is the Hawaiian take on the acoustic jam – the ideal soundtrack for unwinding poolside amid tropical blooms, or steps away from the pool at the Sunrise Pool bar.

Regularly in The Study, Tahiti Rey sings soulfully to Jason Alan’s free-flowing guitar. Tahiti, a Hawaiian-born singer/songwriter, won a Hawaii Music Award for her debut album, Acoustic Beauty. Rey’s voice set to Alan’s guitar blends smoothly into The Study’s subtle sexiness. Request a signature cocktail and drink it all in.

The Study sounds different during Ice Cream Sundays (10 p.m. to 2 a.m. every Sunday night), when Honolulu DJs Anit and Compose will spin you into a trance. (Frozen indulgences sweeten the scene.) Return to The Study any night between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. for Reverse Happy Hour with specials on featured beer, wine and bottles.

Naturally, Thursdays through Saturdays at ADDICTION pulse to exclusive beats. Thursday Girls’ Nights might feature a Waikiki DJ; Friday and Saturday nights are full of surprises – with frequent appearances by high-profile DJs from the mainland and celeb soirees.

  • Meet the Musicians

    Kainalu

At THE MODERN HONOLULU we host original, local musicians.

How would you describe your group and your music?

I would describe myself as a singer/songwriter...and I would best describe my music as acoustic soul..a mix of folk, pop and soul.

How is your music influenced by Hawaii?

My music has so many influences, both in Hawaii and out of Hawaii. But in terms of how Hawaii influences my music, I would say that the laidback feel to my music is what I draw most from the Islands.

What is unique about performing at THE MODERN HONOLULU and why do you enjoy it?

THE MODERN HONOLULU is unlike any [place] that I've ever played at/seen before. It's the vibe that makes it unique. It's classy, contemporary...and sophisticated. And the mix of people who come through are always looking for good music.

  • Tahiti Rey

At THE MODERN HONOLULU we host original, local musicians.

How would you describe your group and your music?

Acoustic contemporary music with a pop/rock/folk influence

How is your music influenced by Hawaii?

Hawaii is a melting pot and so is my music. I only sing songs I LOVE, and that covers a wide range of genres and [spans] the decades. I am inspired by all the visitors to Hawaii [who] love to see that there is not just Hawaiian music at live music venues. They love to hear familiar songs done with an emotionally-driven, soulful delivery.

What is unique about performing at THE MODERN HONOLULU and why do you enjoy it?

I perform almost every day somewhere, and THE MODERN HONOLULU is by far my favorite venue. The atmosphere created by the hotel is unmatched by any other venue in Waikiki. It has amazing sunsets, chic decor, wonderful staff, great food and great cocktails.

  • Alex Oasay

At THE MODERN HONOLULU we host original, local musicians.

How would you describe your group and your music?

Acoustic rock/folk with a little bit of variety mixed in between.

How is your music influenced by Hawaii?

My music is influenced by Hawaii because of the many diverse visitors that come to visit here, I try to play music that hopefully everyone will enjoy no matter where they are visiting from.

What is unique about performing at THE MODERN HONOLULU and why do you enjoy it?

What is different about performing at THE MODERN HONOLULU is the atompshere. From the beautiful hotel to the view of the sunset, there are not too many venues like this. I enjoy playing at THE MODERN HONOLULU because of the people, the clients are always friendly and the staff here always go out of their way to help. This is one of my favorite places to perform.

  • Yoza

At THE MODERN HONOLULU we host original, local musicians.

YOZA took to music early, learning to play the ukulele at age 5. By the time she turned 10 years old, she performed with world renowned ukulele master, Roy Sakuma, as a "Super Keiki."

With the fusion of Hip Hop, R&B and Latin influences, she has redefined the sound of "acoustic soul." From her rich, palpable ballads to her show-stopping upbeat renditions, YOZA is currently splitting her time between Hawaii and Los Angeles, where she's in studio working on her debut album.

  • Christian Yrizarry

At THE MODERN HONOLULU we host original, local musicians.

How would you describe your group and your music?

A "feel good" Hawaiian interpretation of today's popular music. We love the music of a number of popular national acts today, i.e. Bruno Mars, Adele, Maroon 5, Pharrell, Jack Johnson, John Mayer and John Legend to name a few. We give a polished, island style interpretation of the music of performers we admire. Our mix of the consummate island instrument (the ukulele) and the warm tone of the brass (saxophone) are 2 elements that make our performance unique and a must see.

How is your music influenced by Hawaii?

Our musical inspirations span acts from Elvis Presley to Prince, The Makaha Sons of Niihau to Led Zeppelin, and Bruno Mars to Michael Jackson, but our #1 influence is birthplace of our music, Honolulu, Hawaii. From the island sunsets to the palm trees to the many world famous beaches to the beautiful people, we find influence and inspiration around every corner in our island home.

What is unique about performing at THE MODERN HONOLULU and why do you enjoy it?

THE MODERN HONOLULU is the most unique and one-of-a-kind property in Waikiki. The mix of posh Manhattan boutique hotel-style decor and the elegant island sunsets make THE MODERN HONOLULU our favorite performance venue. All of this being said, the warmth of the personnel and the quality of service is the true centerpiece at The Modern.
